GaIT Disorders
GaIT Disorders
Have you noticed you’re walking differently following a past injury? Does pain in your back change the way you walk? There are many reasons a person starts walking differently, most of which can be resolved with physical therapy at Stafford Physical Therapy!
Walking requires intricate coordination of the entire musculoskeletal system and involves precise timing and coordination of muscles, joints, and nerves to allow the body to propel itself forward rhythmically. Striding/stepping varies from person to person due to height, weight, health status, and can be influenced by the culture we grow up in.
Gait is defined as the pattern of a person’s walking. Walking is often considered an ordinary function by most people. When walking becomes limited or dysfunctional, the importance and significance of walking normally is finally appreciated.
Possible causes an abnormal gait are:
Arthritis/Joint degeneration
Spine and/or lower extremity injuries
Neurological conditions (i.e., Parkinson’s, degenerative nerve diseases, stroke, etc.).
Muscle disorders (i.e., weakness, muscle wasting)
Vestibular disorders/vertigo
No one wants to experience pain or unsteadiness when standing or walking. Fortunately, the physical therapists at Stafford Physical Therapy are experts at identifying and treating the common conditions that affect your gait. We will give you the tools to restore your walking ability and get back to doing what you love!
